8 Reasons to Obtain or Maintain a Medical Marijuana Card in the State of Ohio

On August 6, 2024, the Adult-use (Recreational) marijuana program went into effect. Further information can be viewed here.

Continued participation in the State of Ohio Medical Marijuana Program is encouraged for the following reasons:

Special Status Discounts:  Most dispensaries offer discounts to patients with Veteran or Indigent (Disability) status recorded in the Registry.  To qualify for a special status, certain requirements apply which can be found here. Your “recommending” physician can assist you in applying for a special status.

Higher daily purchase limits:  As a medical marijuana card holder, you are limited to 45-day units in a 45-day period and can purchase more than 10-day units per day during your visit to a dispensary.  Once you exceed the 45-day limit, purchases then fall onto the recreational side with a 10-day limit per day plus the additional 10% tax.

No additional tax:  Active medical marijuana card holders are not subject to the additional 10% sales tax when purchases are made under the 45-day limit.

Elimination of the State Registration Fee:  The Division of Cannabis Control has eliminated the annual registration fee (new and renewal) for patients and caregivers.  The only cost is the recommendation fee charged by an Ohio CTR physician who registers your qualifying condition. Rates vary widely among CTR providers and companies.

Special Considerations:  Some employers may take into consideration medical marijuana patients holding an active recommendation in their workplace policies. Similar considerations may be given to individuals under court supervision. You should speak to your employer, attorney, or probation officer before proceeding.

Priority Line:  Some dispensaries offer a priority line for patients with an Ohio Medical Marijuana card. Check with your favorite dispensary.

Physician Access:  Obtaining a medical marijuana card in Ohio requires consultation with a physician who can assist with suggestions and questions related to the treatment of your qualifying medical condition(s).

S

pecialized Products for Medical Patients:  Some dispensaries may hold in reserve products designed for medical usage for card holders. Again, check with your favorite dispensary.
